Creating Meaning
How to Edit Guide
Mean Girls creates meaning through the use of collage, tempo and timing
The opening of the film shows shots of different characters looking down on another character, the timing they use is quite slow as they are trying to build up intensity, the speed picks up as thee girl enters the school and it is seen as a new beginning for her, this makes the audiemce feel how the director wants the character to feel which in the case is nervous. The tempo of the shot gets faster and faster as the girl enters the corridors of her new school and it starts to seem more like reality.
Story- centred Editing and the construction of meaning
The editing within the film makes the audience feel how the character is meant to feel, nervous, it shows the emotion of the character, when each cut is made for editing you begin to see how the story may adapt, for example when you see the beginning of the film you see the father character holding a lunch bag gives strict instructions to what the audience is led to believe is a little girl however when the cut is made it shows that the character is actually a 16 year old girl who had been homeschooled her whole life.
most of the shots in the sequence are close-up or mid shots but it has a few long shots aswell, this is to show facial expressions and emotions of the characters or/and there surroundings. Most of the character shots are eye-line shots this is so that the audience can relate to them.
